Many people have asked me if all I do is go scuba diving. While the activity of scuba diving is something that I cherish and love to do, there are other activities in my life that I enjoy doing that are not diving related. While scuba diving is at the top of the list of activities that I prefer to do, I decided to let everyone know of other activities that I enjoy. In the past, I have learned that when I focus all of my recreational time to only doing one activity, I quickly get tired of it. When that activity requires a lot of political BS (like the scuba diving “business”) it becomes extremely frustrating. So here is a short list of the activities that help keep me sane, mostly sane that is.
- Any involving my kids. I hear many of my friends who have kids complain about going to baseball, soccer, football games for their kids. Maybe it is because I’m with my kids all day long, but I really do enjoy watching them do their activities. I have two girls and consider myself a man’s man, but I don’t get sick of ballet or gymnastics. It has been great to watch them grow up and develop into an actual person. I don’t see how many father’s can go without seeing their kids every day. Scuba diving takes a distant second to this activity.
- Disc Golf – I have started playing a lot of disc golf when I’m not diving. If you are not familiar, it is like golf, but with frisbee type discs. I enjoy it for a few reasons: 1) It’s cheap. All courses in my area are free. I can spend $100 and have enough discs to last me 3 years (unless I lose them), 2) It gets me outside. I enjoy being in the sunshine and fresh air. 3) My little kids can participate. My youngest loves putting a disc in the basket. They also enjoy chasing after the discs when I throw them and telling me I stink. If you’re into disc golf, check out this disc golf store.
- Football – I enjoy watching football games (American style that is). Once I started diving more, I didn’t have time to participate in any fantasy football leagues. Eventually, my only exposure to football was seeing the highlights on the evening news. I’ve started allocating some time to sit in my movie theater and watch a game or two.
- Hiking/Camping – Before I was married and had kids, I enjoyed going camping and hiking. I even did some backcountry hiking in Colorado for a week. I haven’t done it in a while, but would really like to get back to the mountains again. The only downside is that I married a princess. My wife thinks roughing it is staying at a Super 8 with a continental breakfast. So it may be a while until I can go camping again. I am thinking about setting up the tent in the backyard and sleeping out there with my oldest. I think she would get a kick out of it.
So there’s my list of things that I enjoy doing, outside of scuba diving. Even though I prefer to be scuba diving, by participating in these activities it helps keep me enjoying the activity of scuba diving.
Tell me what is on your list.

Hi Duane,
I love participating in outdoor activities that involve hiking or travelling long distances but I understand that walking around in nature for hours on end does sound a bit boring.
Maybe your kids would be intersted in Geocaching. Ive been doing it for a year now and really enjoy it.
Thanks for the post
Thanks for the comment Scott. It depends on what there is to see when hiking. In the mountains, there were tons to see. Hiking around the mid-west, there isn’t much to see.
I’ll check out Geocaching. Any activity that gets me and the kids outside, I’m up for.
