It seems too conservative. When I say recreational diving, I mean limiting depth to 100 feet. So if 100 feet is our maximum depth, our deep stop would be at 50 feet for one minute. With our safety stops starting at 30 feet, I would do "sliding stops" from 50 to 30. Sliding stops are ascend 10 feet at a time with each 10 feet taking 30 seconds. Then stay at the stop for 30 seconds. So in our 100 foot example, I would do a 1 minute deep stop at 50 feet, take 30 seconds to get to 40 feet, stay for 30 seconds, take 30 seconds to get to 30 feet, then start my stops for 1 minute each through 10 feet. Then take 1 minute to go from 10 feet to the surface.

Hope this clears things up.

Duane:

Thank you for explaining this, when I teach I have changed my students decompression profile to a deep Pyle stop at 70 for one minute

50
40
30
20
. . .all for one minute
and then 10 fsw for 3-5 minutes depending on how much air (so as to not violate my students'rock bottom)

This is what I learned in Fundies as well as in my tech run up training.

What are your thoughts on this profile?

I will agree with you that the "15 foot safety stop for 3 minutes" is antiquated at best and negligent at worst.

Thanks for your braintrust on this, and look forward to hearing from you.
